My Focus This Month

I’ve entered myself and dedicated myself to completing NaNoWriMo’s Challenge of completing a 50,000 word novel by November 31st. For more info or to participate be sure to check out NanoWriMo.
Current status: Roughly 3000+ words.

Novel synopsis: Inspired by the recent fires we faced in Souther California, this story revolves around an individual who, very much like the city burning around him, has a compelling, burning desire that he must face before he becomes completely consumed.

Wish me luck.

[Update] 11/7/07 - 5600 words. 44,000 more to go!

[Update] 11/8/07 - 7655. Still a lot to go! My goal is to have 15,000 done by the end of this weekend.

[Update] 11/12/07 - 12,000 words completed. Didn’t hit the mark I was aiming for, but still damn proud. Only 38,000 left to go. Still feeling good.

Yoga – yogamazing, free Podcast that emphasizes all forms of yoga,
for all parts of your body including strength training. See how you
can utilize your own weight and gravity to build strength.

Pull-ups, sit ups. Set up a goal, keep it steady. Every other day
take it up a notch and challenge yourself. Once your body finds its
limits work to meet those. Once you pass them, set new goals and find
new limits.

Cardio – Make cardio more then about running. Turn it into a sport,
literally, or find something you enjoy doing. Whether it’s a change
of scenery, with a friend, or as an activity, something enjoyable
will keep you focused and constant. Games/sports, rowing, skating are all great forms of discovering cardio.

Boxing/Wrestling – Utilizing the strengths of others to improve
yourself.

In office exercises, practice stretching your posture straight, arch
your head back and hold it for a minute. Then resume work. Stretch
breaks, quick walks around the office. Step outside and get some sun.
Simple but the body is much like a plant. No light, no breeze and no
warmth, and we’d be stilted.

Wake up, and do 10 push ups right out of bed. Warm yourself up and
stretch yourself out for the day just like you would before a jog.
Finish the night off the same way, let your body wind down and rest
in bed while naturally falling asleep.

Hydrate, eat your fruits and vegetables like you were told growing
up. And do what feels right, usually you’ll find the healthy route in
it.

Stay happy, stay stress free.

Paper Lifehacks

Paper doesn’t seem as efficient as our culture and lifestyle becomes completely digitized. But I don’t think it’s something that will ever be completley phased out. There’s just something simple and beautiful about ink and paper that can never get old.

A few lifehacks that still utilize the essence, simplicity and power of paper:

Moleskine
I carry a small moleskine note book with me wherever I go. Any notes, to do’s, reminders, thoughts, designs, anything and everything can be stored. You can check out lifehacker for better moleskine organization, but I keep mine simple. One book for just ideas, thoughts and quotes that I come across.

Novel Ideas Bookmark
Novel Ideas Bookmarks give you the extended space you need to write notes and quotes you come across in a book and use it as a bookmark. When you’re done with the book you can file away your notecard for easy reference.

Paper Mouse-pad
A simple tool, and I picked it up at work. We work on black desks and optical mouces, mice? don’t work on it. So we tape down a piece of paper and use it as a mouse-pad. Not only is it extermely cheap, it’s completely disposable. I can write my notes, quick reminders, meetings for the day, to-do’s, and doodle when I’m bored. And since it’s disposable, as soon as it’s filled up, I can just tape down a new one.

PaperWallet
Featured on Lifehacker, this DIY teaches you how to make your own wallet out of paper. I’ve been using mine since April 2007 since the article was featured. So far I’ve gone through two. The wallets are amazingly thin, durable and cheap. You can customize them in a lot of different ways too. Either by adding print, cutting a whole int he side so you can just flash your ID instead of pulling it out, add paper clips for recipt organizing, or just a place to quick store tickets, etc. To make it more durable, tape up the sides and corners.

Short Term To-Do
A notecard, notepad or piece of paper on the desk can you help you prioritize your whole day. For some reason seeing everything written out on paper helps me focus on my tasks. I try to keep my to-do’s to a minimum, the most important things to get done for the day, before lunch, etc. My long term lists, one of the few things I keep digital, either through Backpack or through my Inbox.
